On June 29, 2018, Sweden-based !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! tracked 202,157 flights in a 24-hour period, the most  since its launch in 2006. At the peak of the day, there were more than 19,000 aircraft in the air at the same time. Typically, Thursday and Friday are the heaviest travel days, and August is the heaviest month. Christmas Day has the fewest flights of the year.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

What I find even more interesting, though, is noting where the airplanes aren’t flying, like over Syria, western Iraq, and eastern Ukraine.

Started by a couple of aviation hobbyists, the site collects data from volunteers who detect !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (ADS-B) information that is broadcast in real time by aircraft, including aircraft type, carrier, route, registration, altitude, and speed. Most European carriers broadcast this information, but few American-built airliners do. Flight Radar 24 uses data from the FAA for tracking US flights, but that data is delayed by five minutes. Tracking data can also be blocked by request.

A lot more action over Greenland than I would have thought.

Also, why are all those planes flying in this weird northerl y arc? Wouldn’t it be easier to fly straight across the flat earth?

Lastly (probably) there is a problem area in the left lower corner of the map where planes are disappearing ...someone should look into that.

My internet rage started building up for about 1.2 seconds. Then I took a breath and realized the deliberate nature of the joke.

Then I lol’d.

Mr. Mercator would have you think so. Great Circle Mapper is a fun site. You can put in two destinations and it will show the GC route in different map formats. It also gives you the distance.

They are not disappearing, they are landing. There’s a secret chem-trail refueling airport in the South Pacific.
